Once I introduced Luca, it became apparent that I didn’t actually know how tall the trio of characters were compared to one another! Further, there were several aspects of the characters designs I was going back and forth on, so I set down to make a specific reference.

I’ve slowly been developing a handful of shortcuts to remembering various heights and widths for things, so it’s nice to finally collect it all together. Of course, these’ll all probably change for one reason or another down the line, but that’s a problem for future-me.

This was also a good chance to practice what each of the trio’s heads look like at certain angles. It’s another thing I’m going to keep working to improve!

Pretty much all chairs in the world will have some place for tails to stick out, given that most sapient races have them. Designing architecture to accommodate such a variety of species is a fun challenge!

I’m feeling better about blending colors. I want environments to be colorful, but also to feel cohesive. Most of the stuff in this room has the same kind of darker color tone with a bit of lighter stuff from the lights and plants.

Since this is on the second floor, I had to account for the BIG OL’ WINDOWS along the walls of the building. They’re the main natural light source. Most people prefer to try and get in as least one natural (or close enough facsimile) light source within every room.

Designing the plants was really fun. It’s both exciting and scary to know I get to make them look however I want. They’re clearly palm tree-like but if it doesn’t make sense for them to be in this environment, I get to just say they aren’t actually palm trees. Lol.

Not everything is holo-tech! The glass partitions within the room are obviously glass, but the edges do have keystones. They were likely originally built just as touch-screens, but got upgraded with holo-tech later on.

Also carpet designs are hard.

The holo-screens surrounding the Gene Archive itself were a bit more simplistic than I was hoping to do, but nothing wrong with it being easily readable, I suppose…

My first crack at the Tecktrin Lab was underwhelming. One of those situations where, when you actually draw it out, you start to realize just how not-workable some of the designs are.

Thankfully, I’m pretty happy with how the finalized lab came out. It has to serve as both a waiting room sort of thing AND as one of the first places the Tecktrins see after being created. There are medical supplies as well as a handful of simple tools for testing their basic aptitudes. There are also games and weights, as well as a map of the local solar system and a wall of noteworthy Tecktrins.

Yet more characters I’m glad I figured out so many details for considering we barely even see the couple and other dude isn’t even in color. AT LEAST DRAWING THEM WAS FUN.

The holo-tech designs are interesting to me though. I’ve decided that it would make sense for there to be multiple different kinds of screens and projection methods since there’s a heavy focus on meaningful choice of products being a thing. Most basic systems are modular enough that the various kinds of holo-tech can be connected to one another without issue.

Still, it’s a requirement that any life-size holograms of things exhibit some features which distinguish it as a hologram, just to keep any funny business to a minimum.

Holo-tech as a concept fascinates me, and I feel like a lot of science fiction doesn’t take advantage of the the possible implications of its existence. Many just relegate it to being a way of summoning holo-screens that people can interact with. But if it’s complex enough to mimic the function of a computer, it should be able to do all sorts of other things! It could be used to create temporary bridges, 3D models, and other useful stuff!

We’ll get to see more of how the future in this comic uses them in the next chapter.

I’m glad I planned out so much about how these characters look, only for a huge chunk of them to only be seen from behind. Absolutely going to cheat and reuse or actually include some of these designs in a background somewhere.

Along with outfits, one thing I’m hoping to practice more is fur patterns on cats. They can already have nearly any color of fur anyway, so I really ought to experiment with that more.

I’ve been getting more confident at designing background characters, even if it’s more “on the fly.” This wasn’t one of those cases; I specifically worked on the scientists in the Gene Archive since they would be reappearing in multiple pages. Still, I’m feeling more open to experimenting with character’s forms and identities even if they aren’t major players.

Oh, and one of the scientists would be the first Geck we see! And he’s adorable.

While I wanted to make as much of FA unique as possible, I thought it’d be a good idea to return to the waterfall hall concept outside of the hospital rooms. Once again, you hardly see much of the rooms besides the people that’ll be in them, but I can’t help but overplan things regardless.

Originally I wanted to incorporate an earlier stage of Foundation A’s building (back when it was only one floor) in the background of the Leon painting, but I think I dropped that idea since it would be a tiny bit distracting.

Designing wall and clothing patterns has been one of my biggest struggles. It’s hard to make them interesting when I have such little experience doing so. Yet another thing I’ll be working on in the future.

As of typing this, I don’t have any major plans for the MMUs to make an appearance, but I imagine they’d be pretty important in the world! Besides things being made modular, another common practice for designing things is to make them very “complete.” The mobile medical unit is the next best thing to an ambulance or hospital visit when neither of those are presently available.

Quite possibly one of the most important rooms in Foundation A, and indeed one of the most important rooms on the whole planet!

This is where we first really get introduced to the concept of keystones. The black cylinder-shaped “rock” near the back of the room is made of a special kind of technology that can produce holograms and store information. If someone chooses to get an implant (dubbed a “skinplant), they’re able to activate these features remotely (assuming they have the clearance), but the keystones act as a means for people without those implants to use the features as well. Plus, they mark objects and/or locations which have holo-tech to access.

It’s common to see things that have a black touchpad (which is usually referred to as a keystone). As such, people rarely decorate things in the environment to have pure black sections so they can avoid confusion. Slightly lighter shades of blacks/grays aren’t frowned upon, though.

Another fun detail that may be hard to pick out is that around the keystone near the back, there are a bunch of plants… specifically, pea plants. If you want to learn some real-world scientific history, look up Gregor Mendel and Pea Plants. I thought that’d be a cute little easter egg to put in.

The finalized look for the area directly around Foundation A! Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see nearly as much of this as I would have liked (yet). Being able to see more of the environments (ESPECIALLY when I put so much work into how they look) is yet another thing I’m working on.
