I tried to communicate that the mini-panels were what happened before the larger ones around it, but I’m not sure that came across as well as I’d hope. Oh well, always fun to try new things.

Fun fact, they were a holdover from the predecessor comic to KttFF. Short version, they were the group that got Leon and one of his friends out of a cave when they got stuck in there once. Nice to see they’ve still got things going on 500 years from Leon’s time!
